In 1992, with over 25 years of steam locomotive maintenance and restoration under his belt Bernie Watts founded BACKSHOP ENTERPRISES with the purchase of the former Westinghouse Steam Driven Air Compressor Division from Crown Metal Products Company, Inc.
Bernie Watts began as a volunteer at Roaring Camp & Big Trees Railroad in the late '60's. In 1971 he joined the original crew on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama, NM for 9 years; 7 of those years as Shop Foreman. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Durango, CO was the next stop for Mr. Watts, compiling experience in the 6 years he spent as Lead Man & Assistant Shop Foreman in the locomotive maintenance shop. Spring of 1987 brought him north to the Georgetown Loop Railroad in Georgetown, CO where the opportunity to purchase the Steam Driven Air Compressor Business and utilize his experience to serve a multitude of steam locomotive operations.
